John E. Chubb

John E. Chubb began his tenure as the president of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) on July 1, 2013.
Dr. Chubb has devoted his career to education, working with teachers in K-12 schools; examining issues of key importance to school leaders and policymakers as a researcher; teaching at Stanford, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins universities; and leading an education consultancy and a think tank.
A prominent thought leader, Dr. Chubb’s writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Education Next, The Public Interest, and The American Political Science Review, among other publications. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including The Best Teachers in the World: Why We Don’t Have Them and How We Could (EdNext Books, 2012); Liberating Learning: Technology, Politics and the Future of American Education, with Terry M. Moe (Jossey Bass, 2009); Within Our Reach: How America Can Educate Every Child (Roman and Littlefield, 2005); Closing the Achievement Gap, with Tom Loveless (Brookings, 2001); and Politics, Markets, and America's Schools, with Terry M. Moe (Brookings, 1990).
Prior to joining NAIS, Dr. Chubb was interim CEO of Education Sector, a nonprofit think tank. He was responsible for funding, operating, and directing the policy work of the organization and its staff.
He was a founder and CEO of Leeds Global Partners, an international education services and consulting firm, where he helped provide training for school leaders around the world.
In 1992, he co-founded Edison Learning, Inc., a pioneering education management organization, where he worked for 18 years. At Edison, he helped manage public schools in 20 states, serving 325,000 students. Dr. Chubb served as executive vice president and chief education officer, working in schools with principals and teachers to improve performance.
From 1984 through 1992, he was a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. He has served as a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, since 1999, where he is also a member of the Koret Task Force on K-12 Education. Earlier in his career, Dr. Chubb was an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University, 1978-84, and taught courses in the politics of education, national policy, and statistics at Johns Hopkins University and at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy.
Chubb received his B.A. degree in political science, summa cum laude, from Washington University in St. Louis, and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota.
