School Membership


NAIS member schools are K-13 private, independent schools of all types and sizes around the country. Being a part of the NAIS community helps you stay at the forefront of best practices and keeps your school competitive among your peers.

At NAIS, we focus on delivering the network and tools you need to best serve your students. Whether it’s professional development, best practices, or idea sharing, the NAIS community will be there to support you. When your school joins NAIS, every staff and faculty member of your community – from teachers to trustees – gains access to all of our resources to help stay at the forefront of the industry.

Requirements of Membership

NAIS Member Schools are nonprofit, independent schools located in the United States.* To be eligible to be an NAIS member, a school must demonstrate in the application process that it meets the following requirements:
  • Has 501(c)(3) nonprofit status
  • Is governed by an independent board of trustees
  • Has been fully accredited by an approved organization
  • Has demonstrated a commitment to diversity in compliance with state and federal law, as evident in all nondiscrimination policies for admission and hiring
  • Agrees in spirit with the NAIS Principles of Good Practice

Candidate Membership

If your school is not yet accredited, but is actively working toward it, you may still be eligible to be an NAIS Candidate Member. Candidate Members have full access to NAIS benefits, with the exception of voting at the NAIS Annual Membership Meeting. To learn more, contact us at or (202) 973-9700.
*Independent schools in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands may choose to apply for membership OR to become a Standard or Premium Subscriber.

Annual Membership Dues

Schools that join NAIS between April–June of 2017 will pay dues for the 2017–2018 school year (beginning July 1, 2017). With this payment, you will receive complimentary membership through June 30, 2017.

The dues for school membership are based on student enrollment. The 2017–2018 dues rate is $14.44 per student in grades K–13, and $7.22 per preschool and pre-kindergarten student. Dues will not exceed $12,250 or be less than $350.
