Accomplished playwright, journalist, poet, and novelist, Pearl Cleage probes issues of race, sex, and love in a growing body of literary work while she reveals poignant truths about brave black women. An Atlanta-based writer, her works include five novels, a dozen plays, two books of essays, two books of poetry, and ten years of newspaper columns. Chosen by Spelman College as one of their Cosby Chairs in the Humanities, Cleage is currently teaching at the college. She hosts a weekly environmental podcast for TreeHugger.com. |  | | KEVIN JENNINGS Friday, February 29: 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Diversity Leadership Award Recipient An accomplished writer, teacher, and leader in the fields of K-12 education and civil rights, Kevin Jennings began his career as a high school history teacher. In 1990 he founded the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (www.GLSEN.org). Under his leadership, GLSEN has made safe schools a national issue. Newsweek named Jennings to the “Century Club” as one of “100 people to watch in the new century.” In addition to authoring six books, Jennings helped write and produce the documentary Out of the Past. |  | | FIROOZEH DUMAS Friday, February 29: 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Funny in Farsi: Humor & Shared Humanity Click here to read an article about Firoozeh Dumas's presentation. Firoozeh Dumas was born in Abadan, Iran, and, at the age of seven, moved to Whittier, California, with her family. After a two-year stay, they moved back to Iran, then two years later, returned again to California. She grew up listening to her father recount the many colorful stories of his life in both Iran and America. Firoozeh decided to write her own stories as a gift to her children, resulting in the collection called Funny in Farsi. Firoozeh reminds us that our commonalities far outweigh our differences… and she does so with humor.
