8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

McCormick Place Convention Center West
Chicago, IL

Click here to read an article about the panel discussion led by Merry Merryfield during the afternoon workshop at the 2009 Global Education Summit.

Join leaders of independent education from around the world at the fourth NAIS Global Education Summit (GES) for practical information on implementing global programs and an inspiring example of global citizenship. Participants will attend four of six breakout sessions on specific aspects of global education, then hear from Luma Mufleh, who works with refugee children and families in the Atlanta area.

After lunch, the GES concludes with participation in one of the NAIS Annual Conference three-hour workshops. These will include a featured workshop on Global Curriculum, and one on Middle East Studies. You'll take home practical ideas for developing global citizens in your school.

Click here for a full description of the GES from the onsite program.

Luma Mufleh
Keynote Speaker

Mufleh Luma

Luma Mufleh is from Jordan and is the inspirational coach of an Atlanta-area soccer team called the Fugees -- short for refugees. The players on this team come from 18 war-torn countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Congo, Somalia, and Sudan. Most of them have endured unimaginable hardship: One young boy was forced by soldiers to shoot his own best friend, another watched his father shot to death, and all have been robbed of their childhood.

Mufleh quickly realized that the needs of this particular team were going to be unique: The players were dealing with post-traumatic stress issues, language barriers, cultural disconnects, and devastating poverty as their economic reality.

By making a commitment to these young children, Mufleh made a commitment to their families as well. The team provides strict discipline (all players must sign a code of conduct contract), tutoring for the players, and a sense of community for them and their families. Weaving together a community based on shared experiences, both on and off the field, Mufleh helps the players develop support networks for themselves and their entire families.

With an emphasis on what can be done to change the life of one child, one family at a time, Mufleh's work is the kind of "Social Entrepreneurship" that radically transforms any community, and provides a moving example of true global citizenship.
