2007 INSTITUTE FOR STUDENT LEADERS
Kingston-upon-Thames, London, England
Marymount International School
June 24-29, 2007

The Institute for Student Leaders (ISL) is a forum for developing global leadership skills. Students from public and private schools around the world will come together to develop their skills in global leadership, advocacy, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship, which are key elements for global education in the 21st century.

Schools participating in the 2006 Challenge 20/20 as well as Marymount Schools from around the world are invited to submit an application to send up to three student representatives and a faculty member, who will serve as chaperone during the travel but will also be a participant in the conference. Students should be students currently in eighth through 11th grades.

Dates and Location

The institute will take place in Kingston-upon-Thames, London, England, from June 24-29, 2007. We are working in conjunction with the Marymount Schools and the event will take place at the Marymount International School London campus.

Please note that we changed the original location and date for ISL (originally Denver, March 2007) to allow schools more time to work on Challenge 20/20 and to provide more student leaders an opportunity to attend. Our hope is that ISL will be held in a different location and country every year, alternating between the U.S. and other countries.

ISL Cost

$975 (U.S. dollars) per participant, plus airfare, and a voluntarily carbon offset contribution (details to follow). Both students' and chaperones' registration fee is $975 (U.S. dollars) per person. Students and chaperones will participate in all aspects of the program.

Challenge 20/20 award recipient schools will have their expenses at least partially underwritten. Middle and elementary school winners may send faculty members to participate in the awards ceremony. Their costs will also be at least partially underwritten.

Arrival and Departure

Those accepted to participate in ISL this year, should plan to arrive at Marymount School London on June 24. Registrations are from 12-4pm. Make plans to depart on June 30, as check-out takes place from 6am to 12pm on that day. The closest airport to the school is Heathrow Airport.

Registrations

Because of space limitations, we can only accept a limited number of students so register early. This special opportunity is limited to students who completed the Challenge 20/20 program as well as students from Marymount Schools from around the world and priority for registrations will be given to Challenge 20/20 award recipients and Marymount Schools.

The limited number of spaces that are available for this event will be assigned to those schools that complete the entire registration process first. As mentioned above, priority will be given to Marymount Schools, Challenge 20/20 award recipients, and foundation schools.

Marymount School Building

Marymount International School sits on a hill top on a beautiful seven-acre campus in the London suburb of Kingston. Its assembly spaces, classrooms, dining areas, and dormitories are first rate. But it can accommodate only 100 people. Therefore, this conference will be small (probably 75 students and 25 faculty) and intensive: Experiential learning will include workshops and excursions to relevant sites in the London area. The ISL program will also include an awards ceremony for Challenge 20/20 and many opportunities to forge friendships with others who share your passion for global engagement and leadership.

Marymount School StudentsEach school is required to send a chaperone with its students. Chaperones must be faculty from the participating students' schools. Both students and chaperones will participate in all aspects of the ISL program and must attend all sessions, activities, and excursions.

Note: In addition to submitting the online registration, we must receive (by fax) completed Student Conduct Agreement and Parent Consent/Medical Release forms for each participating student. Your registration will be complete only when we receive these forms.

Foundation Support

Many students and chaperones were able to attend ISL due to the generous support from foundations such as the Robert Bosch Stiftung, Stuttgart, Germany, and the Geraldine Dodge Foundation, Morristown, NJ, USA.

The Robert Bosch Stiftung provided funding to German schools and their partners from the NAIS Challenge 20/20 program.

The Geraldine Dodge Foundation provided funding to schools from New Jersey, USA, and their partner schools from the NAIS Challenge 20/20 program.
