NAIS, in partnership with Global Youth Leadership Institute (GYLI), is pleased to announce the 2009 Institute for Student Leaders (ISL). Join fellow Challenge 20/20 program participants and others from around the world in this intensive ten-day institute.
The Institute for Student Leaders (ISL) was originally planned to take place at the United World College in Mahindra, India in June 2009. However, due to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, GYLI and NAIS have decided to move the 2009 Institute for Student Leaders to Costa Rica. GYLI has been delivering successful programs in Costa Rica every year since 2005, so the 4th Annual ISL will continue to build on this reputation for excellence in programs. The 2009 ISL will include many positive changes and improvements from past programs. The most important improvement is that the ISL will be combined with existing GYLI Year 3 programs in Costa Rica. In this way, ISL participants will benefit from teachers and students with prior experience in leadership programming. These GYLI students and teachers will also benefit greatly by meeting people from around the world dedicated to social justice, environmental sustainability, and collaborative leadership. Dates: The GYLI Year 3/ISL will be a 10-day program. School groups will have the option to participate in one of two, identical program dates. ISL Program 1: July 6-July 15, 2009 ISL Program 2: July 17-July 26, 2009 Location: The Year 3/ISL will take place between two main locations: UWC – Costa Rica, site of the 2008 ISL, and EARTH University, an international university for sustainable development in the tropical regions of the world. Both sites are world-renowned for their innovative approaches to educating an international student population. Theme and Activities: The main theme of the 2009 ISL will be Global Water Issues. Hands-on learning from projects at EARTH University will accompany student and faculty discussions and simulations of water issues in the world. One highlight of the 2009 ISL will be a 3-day home stay near EARTH University. Students will stay together in small groups in these family homes, where they will be immersed in the everyday life of Costa Rican families that practice sustainable farming. Other programmed activities during the ISL will build trust, communication and negotiation skills across cultural differences. Please see the GYLI website (www.gyli.org) for a daily schedule.
Costs: The program tuition for students and teachers will retain the same daily rate as last year’s ISL: $200 per person per day. Total tuition for the ten days will be $2,000. Participants: Participation is open to 1-2 teachers and 2-5 students from every school. Students should be age 16-18 years old. School groups from around the world will join with others who are in their 3rd year of the GYLI program to form a very diverse, international population of students and teachers. We are expecting about 40 students in each ten-day program. Organizational partnership: GYLI and NAIS will work as full partners for this 2009 ISL. GYLI is responsible for all preparation and programming. Registration: To register for the 2009 ISL, contact the GYLI office or visit the GYLI website (www.gyli.org). If you have any questions, the GYLI staff will walk you through the online registration process.
