Program Information

INTRODUCTION

The Institute for New Heads (INH) is a five-day residential program designed to launch new heads into their first or second year of leading an independent school. Participants will acquire a general understanding of their leadership styles, participate in presentations and small group dialogue designed to de-mythologize the head experience, build a strong peer network, focus on the essential tasks of headship, and take away a toolkit of resources they can draw on during their first or second year.

AUDIENCE

INH is designed for individuals who are about to start, or have just completed, their first year as head of school.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES AND OPPORTUNITIES

  • Understanding of the head as change agent;
  • Exposure to the fundamentals of school governance, finance, legal issues, diversity initiatives, and development;
  • Understanding of school culture and climate, crisis management, time management, supervision and evaluation, and strategic planning;
  • A primer of resources for the first year;
  • A peer and faculty network;
  • A new heads listserve for the first year;
  • A half-day follow up program at the 2010 NAIS Annual Conference; and
  • Opportunities for programs and support for spouses/partners and families.

METHODS

INH is the result of more than 20 years of research experience with launching new heads, and supporting them through their first year, as well as the integration of the most current thinking on leadership.

DATE AND TIME

Participants should arrive on the afternoon of July 8. INH ends the evening of July 13, though participants are welcome to stay through check-out on July 14 at no additional charge.
