Environmental Sustainability

NAIS believes that schools need to work toward environmental sustainability by becoming more green, reducing school and personal carbon footprints, promoting a commitment to life-long environmental responsibility, and incorporating environmental education into the curriculum. As part of NAIS's Sustainability Initiative, we have assembled below articles, presentations, and reports in environmental sustainability. Please contact Jefferson Burnett or Wynn Calder, NAIS sustainability consultant, if you have ideas for additional resources.

WASHINGTON -- For the first time, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership announced the 20 primary and secondary schools and districts nationwide using the most power from renewable energy sources. The top Green Power Partner schools are buying nearly 113 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) that would be produced from the electricity use of 11,000 American homes for one year. Of the 20 schools and school districts named, 13 are independent schools, including Bullis School, The Dalton School, Greenwich Academy, Norwood School, Hotchkiss School, Kent Place School, The Nightingale-Bamford School, The Hewitt School, Green Acres School, Sheridan School, Pine Crest Preparatory School, Ensworth School, and Evergreen School.
