School News: Maryland Student Accepted at All Ivy League Schools

Fall 2018

When he was 6 years old, Mekhi Johnson heard a radio story about a student who was accepted at all of the Ivy League schools. He told his mother, “I’m going to do that one day.” Last spring, the Gilman School (MD) senior achieved his goal, adding the University of Chicago and other highly selective schools for good measure.

A Gilman student since first grade, Johnson is a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student with a 98.1 average. In addition, he edited the yearbook and literary magazine; played in the handbell choir, jazz band, and drum line; volunteered with an academic and cultural enrichment program serving elementary school students in several Title I schools; sang in the a cappella group; was president of the Diversity Council; and participated in musical theater productions.

This fall, Johnson is attending Harvard University.
