School News: Student Painting to Hang in the U.S. Capitol

Fall 2018

Each spring, the Congressional Institute, a nonprofit designed to help members of Congress better serve their constituents, also holds a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the U.S. and in each congressional district. This year, in the 37th Annual Congressional Art Competition, Girls Preparatory School (TN) senior Phoebe Mills’ painting placed first for its district and will now hang in the U.S. Capitol for a year.

The painting, “Watercolor Window,” was done in oils and is from a photo Mills took of a friend riding on a bus with fogged windows. Courtesy of Julie Deavers
