School News: A Day and a Year of Service

Spring 2019

This past September, Lake Ridge Academy (OH) students, faculty, and staff volunteered at seven different locations within the northeast Ohio area during the school’s Year of Service Kick-Off Day. This annual tradition allows students to serve others, learn environmental responsibility, and build school camaraderie.

Seventh-graders helped out at the Legion Field Community Garden in Oberlin, where they learned about community gardens, food scarcity, and nutrition. Fifth- and sixth-graders cleaned up Lakeview Beach and collected data to analyze Lake Erie’s cleanliness. Other grades helped beautify various parks and beaches by weeding, mulching, spreading wood chips, and collecting litter and debris—while learning about conservation and environmental concerns.

Seniors met their kindergarten buddies for the first time, initiating relationships that will continue through June and beyond. “These relationships are so important to the life of our school community, as the little ones are encouraged in their love of learning by their older buddies,” says Laura Guggenheim, the Year of Service Kick-Off Day coordinator. “And the seniors are encouraged to show their little buddies the very best of themselves and our community.”
