School News: Making Space for Innovation

Spring 2019

Many schools are sold on the benefits of maker spaces, but there’s the logistical concern of, well, making space for them. Palmer Trinity School (FL) recently got creative and built three innovation spaces that encourage the development of interdisciplinary and problem-solving skills along with creativity.

The middle school building now houses The Innovation Station, the upper school created an innovation space from a former math and science room, and a campus garage is now a maker space that can accommodate larger undertakings like The Apollo Project, a student-led solar car experiment. Each space has modular furniture, tables with dry-erase surfaces, and equipment for hands-on projects that include visual arts, videography, virtual reality, audio-recording, and podcasting.

“It is our hope that this approach to creativity and independent learning permeate throughout campus, allowing each student to cultivate useful skills that will stay with them into adulthood,” says Brian Diaz, innovation coordinator.
