School News: A Student Media Outlet

Winter 2021

The Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, the effect of COVID-19 on refugee camps in Europe, child labor throughout the world—these are just a few of the humanitarian crises reported in The Myriad News, a student-run blog that focuses on global politics. Ananya Randeria, a junior at University Prep (WA), is chief executive editor and a founding member of the blog team.

In July 2019, she met students from independent schools across the country at a monthlong summer study abroad program focused on international relations and the European Union. As they visited EU landmarks like the European Commission, European Parliament, and the German Bundestag, she and four others realized there was a lot about the world they didn’t know and wondered if their peers felt the same way. American media is dominated by domestic news, and they wanted to create a space for international news for their peers and others to learn more about global politics.

Since it launched in August 2019, the five-person team has used social media to solicit writers and has grown to more than 50 staff writers and nine lead editors from independent schools around the world. They write news and opinion pieces about a range of topics, from elections and health care to protests and migration. They publish a new article every three weeks, and they source their stories from reputable, nonbiased media outlets, including NPR and BBC News.

They use a Myriad News Instagram account to engage with 3,000 followers, polling them on what topics they want the team to cover. Some of the most popular topics are sustainability and climate change. One staff writer detailed the effects of plastic waste and steps individuals can take to limit their use of plastic items, while another staff writer commented on the detrimental effects of the fast fashion industry.

As the school year progresses, the team aims to post stories every two weeks. Randeria says she wants the blog to continue its mission to inform, educate, and inspire readers.
