NAIS Statement on the Violence at the U.S. Capitol

January 7, 2021

The violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol left many shaken and disheartened. While the events took place in Washington, DC, the impact is felt across our country, and our world.

So many people experienced this event in real-time, in part because we are spending more of our lives online during the pandemic. Many school heads, teachers, and administrators have been supporting students and coping with their own emotions simultaneously.

Educators have a direct role in both teaching the fundamentals of democracy and exemplifying it in words and actions. We can value diverse perspectives and also condemn violence and the divisive rhetoric and false information fueling it. We all have a responsibility to pass on to the next generation the core values and practices of free and fair elections and peaceful disagreement.

As educators and community leaders, we also have a duty to keep hope strong. Providing hope and a sense of stability for young people will encourage them to take an active role in building a healthier, more just future.

Independent school leaders have been there for each other during this difficult year. Let us continue to provide each other support, share ideas, and engage in thoughtful discussion as we begin 2021.
