Tapping on the Glass: The Intersection of Leadership and Gender in Independent School Administration

This study examined leadership styles of heads of schools using a national quantitative survey, as well as qualitative interviews with female heads. The results indicate heads demonstrate transformational leadership styles, female heads self-report higher transformational leadership styles than their male counterparts, and male heads of school ascend to headship faster than women. Further, it outlines how the individual voices of female heads collectively indicate that female heads' natural styles lend themselves to the characteristics of transformational leadership.
