School News: Making Joining Clubs Easy

Winter 2021

At Germantown Friends School (PA), there’s no limit to the clubs that students can be part of. Clubs range from beekeeping, where members maintain a hive on campus, to making a quarterly magazine that covers school and community news. A team that puts together an international film festival is among the most ambitious clubs—students recruit sponsors, market the festival on social media, assemble judges, and select guest speakers for the screening event. And signing up for these clubs is easy, thanks to a site that seven independent school students—five from Germantown Friends—built to promote different clubs and interests.

Last winter, the students created the website (matcha.team/create) after brainstorming the idea at a computer programming event they attended. “We thought that if we created a website that could help people find organizations they were interested in, it would be easier for clubs and organizations to spread their message and find new members,” says Germantown Friends senior Sequoyah Sudler.

Clubs can easily create their own pages, where they can share posts about what they’re doing and schedule meetings. The website replaces cluttered bulletin boards, allowing users to search for what they’re interested in and stay connected to others who share their passion.

The sheer volume of student-led clubs—currently more than 60 at GFS—makes the website indispensable. To start a club, students submit a proposal to the director of clubs and activities, select a faculty adviser, and share information about their club on Matcha and at the Clubs Fair.

The website is available for free to other schools. Users can find and follow organizations of any size from all over the world, not just their school.
