The Common School
The Common School’s mission is to develop strong academic and social skills while nurturing each child’s love of learning, respect and compassion for others, and commitment to the environment. Our vision is of a diverse school community inspired by a common sense of belonging, and by an excitement for learning that comes from children actively discovering, making and doing things for themselves. We believe that meaningful education must cultivate the imagination and instill an appreciation for learning as an engaging, joyful pursuit. We aim to create a safe and stimulating atmosphere for learning that encourages children to trust in themselves and others, honor differences, question, take risks, collaborate, assume responsibility, and discover individual areas of strength and interest. As progressive educators we are guided by respect for children’s individual differences, recognition of their natural curiosity and capacity for growth, and a commitment to authenticity in the activities and materials that shape their learning. To this end, our curriculum is organized around thematic, in-depth studies that integrate many aspects of children’s classroom experience. We value opportunities for rigorous inquiry, for hands-on exploration and creative expression, for cross-age experiences, for quiet reflection, for celebration, and for play.
