Why work for a private, independent school?

There are approximately 2,000 independent schools across the United States. As part of the private school community, these schools provide more than 700,000 students from pre-kindergarten through high school with a unique and high quality education.

Independent schools allow passionate teachers to create educational experiences that meet the individual needs and interests of students. They have the freedom to serve their distinct individual missions, and are nonprofit corporate entities, independent in governance and finance.

NAIS schools:

  • attract highly motivated families and students who are serious about academics and bound for college
  • give teachers much independence and autonomy to collaborate with their colleagues and teach what they believe to be important, not being bound by state-mandated texts, curriculum, or testing.
  • employ teachers that often also coach sports and arts and sponsor clubs, so that they end of knowing the students in the school from many perspectives, and become role models and mentors to students.
  • tend to be more diverse than public schools, since they attract students from a large geographic region rather than from just the neighborhood a public school is situated in.
